4 remedies to fretting in bed.

I'm pretty confident that the occasional bed-situated fretting session is a stranger to no one. When lying in bed, all set for a safe and sound journey to dreamland, it seems only natural to let our minds wander over events that happened in the past day, or events planned for the day to come. Nothing wrong with that. It's only when wandering turns into worrying, that we've got something to worry about. Because when our mind gets stuck on repeat and our thoughts turn into a mad-paced, rambling circle dance, there is no way that we'll ever be able to get some sleep.
Fretting, worrying, cogitating. We all know it's no good, yet we all seem to do it sometimes. And once we've started, it's not easy to put and end to it! So today I'm sharing 4 tricks I always apply when the ponder monster is standing between me and my precious sleep. Now, I'm not saying they're miracle workers, but in my case, they often help.
1. This is a cliché, but it's a good one: put a notebook next to your bed and write down your thoughts. Whether they are rational or irrational, good ideas or bad ideas, things you have to remember or things you want to forget. Write it all down. Because if it's on paper, it no longer has to be on your mind.
2. Stuck in a negative thought spriral? Try to take your mind off things by reading a bit. Sometimes the bad thoughts return once you turn the lights off, but sometimes a short reading intermezzo allows you to slowly dream away in the company of your favourite characters.
3. Think of the sea. Instead of letting your mind be controlled by thoughts that are making you nervous, try to turn your mind into a peaceful place. Start by slowing down and concentrating on your breath. Then, imagine yourself, standing on the beach, watching the waves. Imagine the sound of the waves, rolling calmly back and forth. And everytime another thought pops into your head, imagine that it's being taken away by a wave, deep into the sea.
4. If all else fails - or actually this 'd better be the first step, check if there may be other things that are keeping you from sleeping. I know it sounds silly, but sometimes I lie awake at night, desperately needing to pee, but not wanting to get out of bed, leaving me with no other option than to stay stuck in limbo with nothing but my own thoughts and a blanket. So all I'm saying is, take the bull by the horns and go to the loo, get that glass of water or that extra pair of socks to warm your icy feet, and just maybe, your mind will calm all by itself.
